Find the sites where planning rules allow height
Before a site visit, acquisition teams check what the planning rules allow. This example finds every City of Sydney property that touches an area where the development control plan allows eight storeys or more.
Sydney properties where eight storeys or more are allowed
Data: Sydney Development Control Plan 2012 building height in storeys, and the property layer, both City of Sydney open data (CC BY 4.0)
Method: keep the height-control areas of 8 storeys or more, then the properties that touch them
Receipt on "Building height control (storeys)"
1. filter Storeys >= 8
Receipt on "Properties"
2. intersect with the result of 1
The control is the development control plan's, not an approval: it says what may be built, not what will be.
Run it on your data
Upload your shortlist as a spreadsheet or file and intersect it with the height control instead of the full property layer. Change the 8 in the filter to test another height. See spreadsheets.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add another criterion?
Yes. Each criterion is one step: filter another layer, such as zoning or lot size, and intersect again.
What else decides what can be built?
Heritage listings, the floor-space ratio and development approval. The height control is one input.
