See where wheat area grew or shrank between seasons

Season-on-season change is one of the first things a crop program or market analyst checks. This map compares the Australian Bureau of Statistics wheat area for every SA2 region in 2023–24 and 2024–25, and marks the regions that cut it by more than 10%.

Wheat area by region, Australia

Data: ABS broadacre wheat statistics by SA2 for 2023–24 and 2024–25 (preliminary), CC BY 4.0, added from the Data Hub
Method: join the two seasons on the SA2 code, compute the percentage change, and keep falls of more than 10%

Receipt on "Wheat area 2024–25 by SA2 (preliminary)"
1. simplify 100 m, for display
2. join 2023–24 on sa2_code_2021, max(wheat_area_total) → join_max_wheat_area_total
3. python area_change_pct = (broadwheat_area_total − join_max_wheat_area_total)
                              ÷ join_max_wheat_area_total × 100
Receipt on its result
4. filter area_change_pct < −10
5. dissolve on sa2_code_2021

The two seasons name their area field differently (wheat_area_total, broadwheat_area_total), so the join and the change calculation name both. The 2024–25 figures are ABS preliminary estimates.

Run it on your data

Upload your own areas, such as farms, paddocks or program regions, with a figure for each season, and apply the same join, change calculation and filter. Shapefile, GeoJSON, GeoPackage and CSV all work: see supported files.

Frequently asked questions

What happens when the ABS revises the preliminary season?

The source layers are refreshed weekly. A revision runs the comparison again in your workspace, and the published map changes when you publish it again.

Can I use a threshold other than 10%?

Yes. It is the filter step on the result: change the number and run it again.
